Restorative Heart:
A Taos Women’s Retreat

Heart-shaped grinding stone from
Taos, New Mexico

I take a walk through a 1000-year-old forest in Taos, New Mexico.

When I park and arrive, I have to duck down and step under the gate, and find my way to the trailhead.

As I start out, my mind turns to the people who lived here long ago.  What did they do every day? How did they watch the sunset?  Which birds did they listen to as they washed clothes in the flowing river? How did the grindstone feel under their hands, as they ground corn?

My feet draw me forward, step after step, and my mind begins to still.  I can see the forest all around and hear the distant river and feel the cool on my face.

When I come to the trail’s end, I’m back at the beginning, wondering what will happen next.
